Grocer Giant Eagle
is partnering with a California startup to create in-store tracking of products leading to a no-wait, checkout-free process for shoppers.
The technology from Grabango utilizes computer vision
and machine learning to track shopped items.
Shoppers enter the store and start shopping as they normally would as the system automatically tracks the total items each shopper puts in their
cart. The shopper then can use their phone to pay via mobile pap.
“Giant Eagle is committed to advancing technologies that create an improved, stress-free shopping experience for our
customers while still protecting their privacy,” stated Dan Donovan, Giant Eagle’s director of corporate communications.
Rather than using facial recognition technology, the
Grabango system uses sensors above the shopping area in the store, which monitor the location of all products whether on the shelf, in a shopping cart of with a shopper leaving the store. The tracking
is combined with machine learning algorithms.
