PC Shipments On The Decline

Mobile seems to be taking its toll on the old PC.

For the first time since 2010, personal computing device shipments will drop below 400 million in 2020, according to a new forecast.

Shipments of the devices, including PCs and tablets, is projected to decline 2% a year until 2023, according to the forecast by the International Data Corporation (IDC).

The reality is that consumers have become more used to computing on-the-fly, thanks to portable and mobile devices.

The forecast reflects some of this, with convertible PCs and detachable tablets expected to grow slightly.

The gradual introduction and adoption of 5G is also likely to be a bit of a factor going forward. By 2023, 10% of detachable tablets will have 5G built in, according to IDC.

By 2023, the market is expected to be led by ultra-slim tablets, accounting for 27% market share, followed by slate tablets (26%), desktops (21%) and notebook and mobile workstations (13%).

The mass market is connected and becoming more mobile.
