Simon Weckert toted a bunch of smartphones down empty streets in Berlin and essentially gamed the technology Google Maps uses to predict traffic, he told the Business Insider in an email. It turns out that Google Maps continually pings smartphones actively using the software to determine the approximate density of traffic and how fast it's moving. He carried out the experiment to draw attention to the blind trust that people have in tech companies. Weckert carried out the experiment last summer, but waited to publish the results in honor of Google Maps nearing its 15th birthday.
