Great Clips, Acura, Buffalo Wild Wings Scrap Campaigns Due To Coronavirus

The plethora of sports cancellations due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus and the need for social distancing has resulted in several major campaigns being paused or altogether scrapped. 

Great Clips was set to launch its “Legendhairy Lineup” digital campaign and sweepstakes from FleishmanHillard that celebrates the best #HockeyHair styles from across the NHL. But the company has paused it “until further notice.” 

The company was able to post a video featuring NHL players promoting the contest on Twitter before the NHL suspended the season on March 12. Great Clips has a multiyear partnership with the NHL, NHLPA and NHL Alumni Association.

Michelob Ultra was set to launch creative tied to the PGA Players Championship. “Brooks Havin’ Fun” from FCB featuring PGA Champion golfer Brooks Koepka. The spot has been removed from YouTube but showed the fun ways the golfer manages to make the rigors of training enjoyable.

Many campaigns were set to be tied to NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and March Madness, which was canceled March 12. 

Buick is still running TV spots that call it the “official SUV of March Madness.” The automaker was set to run a complimentary “Grab A Buick” shuttle throughout the duration of Final Four Festivities in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Reese’s was the lead sponsor of Final Four Friday, which would have given fans access to open practices, which are free to the public. The practices were to be followed by the Reese’s All-Star Game, featuring the top senior NCAA student-athletes.

Capital One was set as the lead sponsor of the Final Four Fan Fest, where cardholders would have gotten complimentary tickets and priority access.

Coca-Cola had signed on at the lead sponsor of the March Madness Music Festival. 

Acura was planning to once again enlist ESPN analyst Jay Williams, along with comedian Seaton Smith, for a March-Madness-themed campaign from MullenLowe. For Acura’s Less Talk Sports Network, Williams and Smith would have used as few words as possible to comment on the brackets, biggest upsets and game highlights surrounding March basketball with real-time pre- and post-game analysis at https://acura.us/lesstalk.

Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant was set to launch a contest in which the winner would live in BnB-Dubs, a bed and breakfast located inside its restaurant at Chicago’s Lincoln Park, for one night during March Madness. 

Coldwell Banker is working on adjusting its media plan, and is still determining when “Guiding You Home” will make its broadcast debut. It is also pausing the launch of the ad on Hulu, On Demand and social campaigns until a new media strategy is enacted. The spot and behind-the-scenes footage can still be viewed on the Coldwell Banker YouTube channel.
