'Variety' Creates Digital Subscription, But No Pay Wall

The entertainment trade Variety has launched a digital subscription offering. Aimed at media industry professionals, the product is called Variety Intelligence Platform  or VIP.

Content on Variety.com will not go behind a paywall.

Instead, VIP subscribers will get additional benefits: a monthly long-form special report, daily short-form commentary, a weekly newsletter, data charts and video content from Variety’s summits and conferences.

VIP content is produced by a team that operates separately from the newsroom. Coverage will range from core businesses like TV and film to new technologies, such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

VIP is currently available for $399.99 a year, with the first month free, or $39.99 a month. Discounted pricing is also available for corporate customers looking for multiple licenses.

Subscribers will have access to a library of reports that Variety has prepared over the past year, including topics such as production incentives, the impact of legalization of sports gambling in the U.S., the role of blockchain in media and branded entertainment.

Variety's inaugural report focuses on the subscription streaming wars. Readers are required to register and log in to view the report.

Variety will soon share a special report for free, sponsored by launch partner Pluto TV, a ViacomCBS company, on the free, ad-supported streaming TV category."

Variety will continue to collaborate with ViacomCBS in the coming months.

Update: This article has been updated to reflect that the special report has not yet been released.
