Discovery UK Combines Free, Paid Channels In New Offering Dubbed Discovery+

Discovery UK will integrate its free and pay-TV offerings under the Discovery+ brand as of next month.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav has said the company will “very soon” launch its long-awaited direct-to-consumer streaming service, to aggregate its content across channels, on a global basis. That offering is expected to be branded Discovery+.

In the U.K. and Ireland, meanwhile, the company is rebranding its ad-supported dplay streaming service as Discovery+, and adding a paid subscription tier.

The ad-supported content from the original dplay service — from channels Quest, Really, Quest Red, HGTV, Food Network and DMAX — will remain free to users. It includes live TV and 30-day “catch-up” capability.

Available pay-TV channels will include Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, ID, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and Discovery History.

In the U.K., consumers can subscribe to the pay tier by web or app purchase for £4.99 per month or £49.99 per year, with a limited-time annual price offer of £29.99. In Ireland, the monthly fee is €5.99, the annual price is €59.99, and the promotional annual offer is €34.99.

Sky Q customers will have access to Discovery+ for 12 months at no additional cost, and the app will complement Discovery’s existing linear offering on Sky. Thereafter, the service will be integrated into the Sky Q platform along with other SVODs, and can be added to the Sky bill.
