The Eater Wine Club will focus on supporting local business — Eater’s city editors will partner with local wine experts to understand community trends and help curate a monthly wine box.
“The subscription will include the kind of wine we, as food-and-wine writers and editors, like to drink, meaning interesting, high-quality wines from small producers, chosen by people we trust,” Amanda Kludt, editor in chief of Eater, told Publishers Daily.
Subscribers will receive a monthly box of two or four bottles, an exclusive newsletter and early access to a virtual wine party, featuring that month’s curator.
The two-bottle box will cost $70 per month, and the four-bottle subscription will cost $110 a month.
The first box features the selections of New York's Zwann Grays, beverage director at Brooklyn’s Olmsted and Maison Yaki restaurants.
The Eater Wine Club will offer a variety of wines, based on themes and seasons each month.
The first month's theme is Greek, for example. December's theme will be festive and celebratory for the holidays, and include some bubbly.
“Too often subscription services now either focus on mass market wine or only on wine from one producer or point of view,” Kludt said. “Here, we are offering selections from the best emerging and established talents in the wine world.
Future months will feature food and dining experts from Miami and Chicago, such as Bianca Sanon, a Haitian-American sommelier most recently the beverage director and general manager of Boia De.
Early next year, Sanon plans to open Paradis Books & Bread, a bookstore, wine bar and bakery in North Miami.
Up next will be Derrick Westbrook, who developed beverage programs at Chicago various restaurants, such as Alinea's NEXT and Elizabeth, before opening his own wine shop, 1340 Beer, Wines & Spirits.
“We really want to tap into what a variety of passionate wine professionals across the country are obsessed with,” Kludt said.
