Netflix Dominates Emmys For 1st Time, With 44 Wins; HBO Follows With 19

In what's now become a pattern for the industry's biggest awards programs, streaming services dominated this year’s Emmys.

Netflix won 44 awards, making it the top Emmy honors winner for the first time. The take tied the record set in 1974 by CBS, and more than doubled Netflix’s 21 awards at last year’s Emmys. Netflix also won the most Academy Awards this year (seven).

Netflix garnered 34 awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, and 10 Primetime Emmys.

“The Crown” reaped 11 total, including best drama series, best directing, best writing, and honors for Olivia Coleman (best actress), Josh O’Connor (best actor), Gillian Anderson (best supporting actress) and Tobias Menzies (best supporting actor).

Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” also won 11 Emmys, including best limited series. In addition, Ewan McGregor won best actor for its limited series “Halston.”

HBO/HBO Max — which has bested Netflix on number of Emmys several times over the years, and tied with it in 2018, at 23 each — this year won 19 awards: 10 Creative Arts Emmys and nine Primetime.

Its wins included best actress in a limited series for Kate Winslet in “Mare of Eastown” and best actress in a comedy series for Jean Smart in “Hacks.” “Hacks” also won for best writing and directing in the comedy category, and “I May Destroy You” won for best writing for a limited series.

Disney+ totaled 14 awards — 13 Creative Arts Emmys (seven for “The Mandalorian”) and best variety special for “Hamilton.”

Disney’s “WandaVision,” which had earned 23 nominations, won three Creative Arts Emmys, but was shut out at the Primetime Emmys.

Apple TV+ won 10, including best comedy series for “Ted Lasso” and best actor in a comedy series for its star, Jason Sudeikis.

The biggest network winner was NBC, with eight. VH1 earned six, and ABC and FX three each.
