Tigers And Snakes And Meta, Oh My!

As you’ve no doubt heard, Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta. The first ad for Meta uses a three-dimensional painting to illustrate the new entity.

The ad, created by Droga5 and Meta’s Creative X group, starts with a girl in a museum. A painting of a nature scene catches her eye and the eyes of others. Looking closely at the painting, it comes alive.

“This is the dimension of imagination,” says a tiger in the painting. The focal point then zooms past some trees and to some toucans swaying with the music. Next, the camera focuses on some flamingos and a bird and a snake.

As this is happening, the girl’s vantage point is seen filling with elements from the painting—the trees and snakes. A caption reads, “This is going to be fun.”

The closing shot features the Facebook logo morphing into the Meta logo.

The ad is a vision of Mark Zuckerberg’s next stage of Facebook. The CEO announced this week that the company’s shift is more than a name change -- it’s the creation of a space called the metaverse. He told CNBC that a new skin-like material less than 3 mm thick could support the metaverse.

It’s unclear right now whether Zuckerberg’s vision will be realized, or whether it’s a PR stunt to drown out recent revelations about Facebook’s waning influence.
