Disney Ramps Up Its D2C Biz: Campbell To Lead 'Content Creation Hub', Earley Named Hulu President

Looking to ramp up content production for its worldwide direct-to-consumer business, Walt Disney is expanding the role of Rebecca Campbell, now chairman, international content and operations, for Walt Disney.

Campbell will lead a new “international content creation hub,” as well as overseeing all of Disney’s international media teams. She reports to Bob Chapek, CEO of Walt Disney.

The new hub will be the fourth content-producing business at Disney Studios Content, General Entertainment Content and Sports Content are the other three business units.

Analysts have had concerns over direct-to-consumer TV and movie production, contending that Disney needs to accelerate TV and movie content to compete with bigger rivals.

Chapek said in a release the company had more than 340 titles in various stages of development and production.



Two other major executive promotions: Michael Paull will take on a newly created position as president of Disney Streaming, overseeing Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Star+. Previously, he had been president of Disney+ and ESPN+.

Paull will report to Kareem Daniel, chairman Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution (DMED).

Joe Earley, who had been executive vice president of marketing and operations for Disney+, will be the new president of Hulu. Earley will report to Paull. Kelly Campbell was the previous president of Hulu. In October 2021, she left to be president of NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service.

At the end of its fiscal year 2021, Disney’s three main streaming brands -- Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu -- amassed 179 million subscribers.

Disney says a new senior executive of Disney+ will be named soon. Russell Wolff will continue as executive vice president-general manager of ESPN+.
