DirecTV Drops RT America

Russian-backed TV network RT America has been dropped by DirecTV, and Russian-based TV businesses have been banned from an upcoming European-based TV market event, in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

DirecTV will no longer carry RT America, a U.S.-based news channel. The satellite pay TV provider was to end a deal carriage with the network later this year.

“In line with our previous agreement with RT America, we are accelerating this year's contract expiration timeline and will no longer offer their programming effective immediately," DirecTV said in a statement.

RT America still has carriage on Dish Network, and on smaller cable TV systems. In October 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice called on RT America to register as a "foreign agent." It eventually complied.

For NATPE's European-based TV market -- NATPE Budapest, an event scheduled for June 27-30 -- the U.S.-based TV event company said it is now banning Russian-based TV/media-related companies: "The Ukrainian people have our full support over the barbaric and horrific invasion of their homeland by the brutal dictator Putin and his surrogates," the group said in a statement. "We wish we could provide more tangible assistance, but what we can do is join the world community and prevent Russian presence from conducting commerce."

On Tuesday, The National Association of Broadcasters issued a statement, stating: “Given the unprovoked aggression exhibited by Russia against the free and sovereign people of Ukraine, NAB calls on broadcasters to cease carrying any state-sponsored programming with ties to the Russian government or its agents.”
