Chevy To Add Equinox To EV Offerings

Chevrolet will add an electric version of its popular Equinox compact SUV starting in the 2024 model year.

The General Motors division promises it will be the most affordable all-electric entry in the segment, with a starting price around $30,000 when it hits the market in fall 2023.

It will also be available with up to an available GM-estimated 300 miles of range on a full charge.

The automaker will play up the vehicle as affordable, functional and stylish, says Chevy Marketing Vice President Steve Majoras.

The automaker will market the vehicle to a wide variety of consumers, similar to the gas-powered version. But there will be a point of difference between the two prospective buyers, he says.

“We have done a lot of work looking at EV buyers and there certainly are some differences -- think early adopter demography -- as well as geography,” Majoras tells Marketing Daily. “The key for us is to capitalize on those who are most likely EV buyers but also target geographies, demographic cohorts and so much more.”

Chevy will evolve its approach as the market evolves, he says.

“But make no mistake — this is going to be a mass market vehicle and as such, this along with Bolt and Blazer and Silverado will be a big push for us,” Majoras says.

He doesn’t think the vehicle will steal customers away from the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV.

“Equinox is different (and could be) a logical evolution and next step for those considering an EV for the first time, or looking to move up from Bolt EV/EUV,” Majoras says.

While many things are similar, such as safety features and the Super Cruise option, many things are also different. like a bigger screen and all-wheel drive offering.

“We see a clear and important role for both,” Majorias says.

Chevy’s approach to EVs is to ultimately offer an EV for every type of buyer, says Scott Bell, vice president global Chevrolet. The automaker introduced the full-size pickup Chevrolet Silverado EV and mid-size SUV Blazer EV earlier this year and already offered its compact SUV Bolt EV and EUV.

“We will have the broadest EV portfolio of any brand,” he said during a media video call where the new vehicle was introduced.

From a design perspective, the vehicle will offer “Americana cool” with a styling nod to mid-century modern architecture, says Chevy designer Sam Bell.

The design team also looked to the iconic Chevy Camaro for sporty cues.

Inside, a streamlined and modern interior offers room for five, available personalized ambient lighting and a smart infotainment system. It also has a spacious cabin, with storage options from front to rear, as well as up to 57 cubic feet of max cargo room, with the rear seat folded.

When it comes to comfort and convenience, heated front and rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel and even a heated windshield wiper park feature, which helps keep the area around the wipers clear of ice buildup, are available.
