Returns Shot Up By 20% During Holiday, Post-Holiday Season

Here is a growing problem for email teams tasked with sending notices regarding returns.

The merchandise return rate increased by 20% YoY from December 1, 2022 to January 15, 2023, according to an analysis by ShipStation. 

But consumers were earlier; 53% of returns were made prior to Christmas, continuing a three-year trend. 

The most popular day to make returns was Cyber Monday: November 28, 2022. 

In contrast, the most popular return date during the 2020 season was January 4, 2021.  

The study is based on data collected from ShipStation merchants that processed returns from December 1, 2022-January 15, 2023.
