Tech-driven publishing platform The Arena Group announced a "significant reduction in its workforce" impacting more than 100 employees of such iconic publishing brands as Sports Illustrated, TheStreet, Parade, and Men’s Journal.

Arena attributed the move to substantial debt and "recently missed payments" and said the reduction was part of cost-cutting measures to transform it to a "streamlined business model."

Following social-media reports that the reduction would effectively eliminate most and possibly all of Sports Illustrated's union employees, The News Guild vowed to fight it and ensure that Arena honors the terms of the union's contracts.
