OpenAI And Guardian Media Group Reach Content Deal

Guardian Media Group today has signed on with OpenAI in a partnership that will bring The Guardian’s journalism to global users of ChatGPT.

The agreement provides Guardian’s reporting and archived journalism will be available as a news source within ChatGPT, next to attributed short summaries and article extracts.

In turn, Guardian will roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to develop new products, features and tools, it says.

“This new partnership with OpenAI reflects the intellectual property rights and value associated with our award-winning journalism, expanding our reach and impact to new audiences and innovative platform services,” says Keith Underwood, chief financial and operating officer, Guardian Media Group.

One year ago, The Guardian published its position on AI, requiring that any use of generative AI is overseen by humans.

OpenAI has signed contracts with numerous publishers, including Dotdash Meredith, Financial Times, The Atlantic, Vox Media, New Corp. and Axel Springer, allowing forms of content usage. But it has also been sued by the New York Times and eight Alden Global Capital newspapers for allegedly misappropriating their content.

The company recently announced it would fund four new Axios newsrooms. Recently, it has reached agreements with UK publisher Future.

“Our partnership with Guardian Media Group furthers our goal of supporting world-class journalism and enriches the ChatGPT experience by providing access to relevant, real-time news content. It’s part of our overall strategy to help publishers and audiences benefit from advanced AI technology,” says Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer.
