Volkswagen, Kong, VCA Charities Partner To Help Dogs

A dog toy with an interesting history connected to the automotive industry has spurred a philanthropic effort.

Volkswagen of America, in collaboration with Kong and VCA Charities, is launching a limited-edition "VW Kong For a Cause" dog toy, which can be purchased online.

For every toy purchased, VW, Kong and VCA Charities will donate another one to local shelters. Net sales proceeds will be donated to VCA Charities to benefit dogs in need through its nationwide network of animal shelters.

Kong has an unexpected origin story that actually connects Volkswagen and animal lovers. It began in an auto repair shop in Denver, where founder Joe Markham’s German Shepherd, Fritz, discovered a spare rubber axle stop from a Volkswagen Type 2 Bus. That moment inspired the creation of the popular Kong toy, which is reportedly as durable as the Volkswagen part.

Now, nearly 50 years later, Volkswagen has brought the Type 2 Bus into the future with the launch of the retro-inspired ID. Buzz.

To commemorate the connection and celebrate National Puppy Day, Kong and Volkswagen have collaborated on a specially designed, ID. Buzz-inspired dog toy in one of the ID.Buzz’s most popular colors: cabana blue.

Volkswagen believes in the power of connection between people, and their pets, says Rachael Zaluzec, senior vice president, customer experience and brand marketing, Volkswagen of America.

The ID. Buzz embodies that spirit, and the collaboration carries forward Kong’s origin story, Zaluzec says, adding that her dog Bob (featured below) totally approves of this project.

The limited-edition toy is priced at $13.99 (plus taxes and shipping costs) and a limited quantity is currently available for purchase while supplies last through vw.com and Volkswagen’s enthusiast gear site, drivergear.vw.com.
