Online Therapy Platform Aims To Destigmatize Asking For Help

After suffering an anxiety attack during a 2023 concert, Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi took two years off from performing in order to work on his mental health. He then teamed with BetterHelp to provide consumers with 734,000 hours of free online therapy -- 1,000 hours for each of the 734 days between his live appearances.

The actual offer was for one month of free therapy -- which, at four weekly 30- to 45-minute sessions, works out to two to three hours per giveaway. So the 734,000 hours would cover hundreds of thousands of people.

Now that another year has passed, a lot of that time is “still remaining,” BetterHelp Chief Growth Officer Sara Brooks said in a statement.

So, there’s a new offer: Anyone who redeems a free month of BetterHelp therapy can gift another free month to someone else.

The idea of users sharing the free month offer, BetterHelp says, is backed by new research showing that 85% of Americans believe seeking mental health support is wise, yet 74% feel society discourages it.

The company’s 2026 State of Stigma Report, conducted in March among 2,000 Americans, points out that BetterHelp continues to find new ways to introduce people to therapy, including not only the Capaldi campaign, but also through partnerships with Billboard and AARP, and via a podcast called “Mind If We Talk?”

BetterHelp also launched a “Feel Lighter” ad campaign earlier this year.

The new free offer is available at betterhelp.com/lewis-capaldi in a campaign anchored by a video featuring Capaldi's reflections, which received 23 million views in its first 11 days on YouTube. In another video, he surprises a fan who started online therapy based on the earlier offer.

A paid media component is supporting the efforts, in addition to owned and earned promotion, to help drive awareness and direct audiences to the videos and other resources.
