AI Is Putting a New Spin on an Old Funnel

For years, marketers revered the funnel and familiar story about how consumers move through it. Separated by well-defined phases; awareness at the top, consideration in the middle, and conversion at the bottom. Search being the dependable engine that pulls people downward. It has been the backbone of digital media planning, audience architecture, and SEO investment.

Today, AI and agentic conversational search have quietly, but profoundly reversed the winds and direction of consumer movement. People who once arrived with clear intent are now being pulled back into broad exploration. Instead of narrowing their choices, they are encouraged to widen them. Instead of moving toward a purchase, they are drifting back into discovery.

This shift is not happening because consumers are confused. It is happening because technology affords them the chance to expand context around every question. A person who once queried “best HVAC system under $3,000” in a traditional search engine, would have landed on a comparison page or a product grid. Today, that same inquiry in an agentic conversation triggers a much wider conversation. They may be shown different cooling strategies, insulation considerations, regional climate factors, financing options, and alternative technologies they may not have even known existed. What used to be a lower-funnel moment has become the beginning of a new awareness journey.

This creates a gordian knot for marketers who are trying to shorten the path to purchase but find it stretching out of their control. As consumers are compelled to linger, to explore, to rethink the problem they came in with, intent moves from a straight line into a twisted one.

For brands, the fallout is real; SEO is absorbing the shock first, organic clicks are falling, long-tail traffic is shrinking, and zero-click behavior is rising. Brands are watching their carefully built search ecosystems lose volume, even as consumer interest remains strong. The issue is not demand. The issue is that search is no longer functioning as a directional tool. It has become a discovery environment. Yet many marketers continue to stare at dashboards that were built for a world that no longer exists, hoping the numbers will stabilize. They won’t.

The reality of the new funnel is that awareness has become a destination rather than a phase. It is a place where people feel informed, supported, and free to explore without pressure. It is a place where they can ask broader questions and receive broader answers. It is a place where they can rethink what they need. In a strange twist, the top of the funnel has become the most comfortable part of the journey and the place where marketers should take extra special care when engaging with them.
