Early 2010: Broadcast Nets Gain Ratings

NBC's Biggest Loser

So far this year, a couple of broadcast networks can boast about gaining some ratings weight. NBC's "Biggest Loser" hit a massive Nielsen preliminary 4.6 adults 18-49 rating/12 share, up 21% from last fall's premiere, and 2% higher than its January 2009 edition's start.

For Tuesday, NBC surprisingly took the night overall among 18-49 viewers, with a 3.8 rating/10 share -- despite some sizable competition.

Even NBC's "Jay Leno Show" spiked a bit from its typical mid-1 ratings. It earned a strong 2.2/6 among 18-49 viewers for the night. NBC also easily won the race for young 18-34 viewers -- it averaged a 3.4/10, ahead of Fox's 3.0/8.

The CBS usual tag team -- "NCIS" and "NCIS: LA" -- posted their expected strong numbers, with a 4.5/12 and a 3.7/9, respectively.

The numbers for each show were up over previous new episodes. Even rookie show "The Good Wife" had a good outing, up 7% versus its latest new episode to a 3.0/8. CBS came in second for the night with a 3.7/10.

Fox was right behind CBS with a 3.5/9 for its Orange Bowl college football game between Georgia Tech and Iowa. It averaged a 3.2/8 for the night.

ABC didn't offer up some of its better shows, running an unusual checkerboard of comedies: "Scrubs" at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. and "Better Off Ted" at 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. It also broadcast its lower-rated new drama "the forgotten." Overall, for the night, ABC landed in fifth place behind Univision with a 1.3/3.

The CW, in reruns with "90210" and "Melrose Place," was about a full rating point less than the bigger networks, at a 0.4/1.

"Biggest Loser" is just that - the biggest loser on television. It is a clear and profound sign of the decline of Western Civilization.
