The acquisition of the Utah-based company comes as Internet-enabled TV has been sparking an array of announcements at this week's Consumer Electronics Show. Move Networks is owned by a group of investors that include Mexican broadcaster Televisa.
EchoStar, which spun off from satellite provider Dish Network three years ago, develops and distributes set-top boxes and other advanced TV technologies.
"TV providers are increasingly demanding the highest-quality video delivery over normal Internet connections, and Move Networks' patent portfolio and proven customer experience allow us to give clients the core technology necessary to stream live and video-on-demand content," stated Roger Lynch, executive vice president at EchoStar Advanced Technologies.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Move worked with ESPN and investor Televisa on a Web-streaming platform that is now ESPN3.com before expanding into Internet-to-TV video.
