6% Of Mobile Users Scan QR Codes

Mobile QR codes have typically been hailed either as a mobile marketing wonder or dismissed as poorly conceived novelty items. A new comScore report doesn't necessarily fall into either camp, but its findings underscore that QR codes are still far from gaining mainstream adoption. As of June, 14 million people, or 6.2% of the U.S. mobile audience, had scanned a QR or other type of barcode on their device.

Moreover, that activity is mostly the province of young, affluent males. The study found that 60.5% of QR code enthusiasts were males, more than half (53.4%) were in the 18-34 age range, and more than one-third (36.1%) had a household income of $100,000 or higher.

In addition to who uses them, a second question is where people are using QR codes. With the small, square graphics, smartphone users can snap a picture to get content or marketing messages that pop up everywhere -- subway posters to TV screens.

Among QR code users, print magazines and newspapers are by far the mostly likely places they will scan a code. Nearly half (49.4%) did so via print sources, followed by product packaging (35.3%), a desktop Web site (27.4%), a poster, flyer or kiosk (23.5%), a business card or brochures (13.4%), a storefront (12.8%), and TV (11.7%).

In connection with barcode scanning in magazines and newspapers, comScore found that the majority of users (58%) did so at home. Nearly four in 10 (39.4%) scanned a QR code from a retail store, a quarter (24.5%) in a grocery store, 20% at work, 12.6% outside or on public transit, and 7.6% in a restaurant.

"For marketers, understanding which consumer segments scan QR codes, the source and location of these scans, and the resulting information delivered, is crucial in developing and deploying campaigns that successfully utilize QR codes to further brand engagement," stated Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president of mobile.

While it seems logical that tech-savvy young guys would be the most likely to embrace QR codes, Ypulse findings suggest that even teens are baffled by QR codes. The youth-focused research firm found nearly two-thirds of students have no idea what they are, while 6% have seen them but don't know how to use them. And among those who have heard of them, only 42% think they are easy and useful.

Being one of the 6%ers, (T-Shirts coming soon!) I had to scan the QR code that accompanies this article. My guess was that it would lead to something related to the content of the article that would further illustrate the usefulness of QR codes, perhaps to one of the links in the article, maybe to a special site that would surprise and delight me.

    It did not.
