Romano To Telemundo President

Emilio Romano, who headed the parent of Mexicana airlines from 2004-07 along with various media roles, is taking over NBCUniversal's Telemundo unit as president. The role includes oversight of the broadcast network, 14 stations and a production studio.

In the 1990s, he worked at Mexican programming giant Televisa in mergers and acquisitions and international operations and served on the board of Telemundo competitor Univision for three years. He also held some management responsibility for Mexican cable network Cablevisión.

Later, he served on the board of companies with branded entertainment operations targeting Spanish and Portuguese speakers. Telemundo has worked to upgrade brand integration opportunities and recently cut a multiplatform deal with Chase.

Lauren Zalaznick, Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media, who oversees Telemundo, stated that Romano's "extensive knowledge of Hispanic media combined with a proven track record running large-scale businesses will be a great addition."

Telemundo is looking to benefit from a Hispanics at NBCU venture that aims to stitch together cross-platform campaigns targeting Hispanics through various company assets. The Telemundo group also includes cable network mun2 that targets bicultural, younger Hispanics.

"As reflected in the latest U.S. Census and the dramatic increase in both viewership and advertising within the Hispanic community these past few years, this exciting market is well poised for explosive growth," Romano stated.
