Fox Scores With Game 1, World Series

Fox gained steam on Wednesday -- winning the night with Game One of the World Series. Still many network competitors weathered the big baseball event for the most part.

The World Series game featuring the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants posted a Nielsen 3.6 rating/10 share against key 18-49 viewers -- this against a 4.2 rating a year ago for the first game. It had 12.2 million overall viewers versus 14.2 million a year ago. Last Wednesday, Fox's major effort -- "The X Factor" at 9 p.m. -- earned a 2.3/6.

Fox averaged a 3.2/9 among 18-49 viewers, with CBS and ABC tied at a 2.7/7. NBC was at 1.6/4; Univision at a 1.5/4; CW, a 0.9/3. This was according to Nielsen preliminary results.

ABC's "Modern Family" -- the top-rated TV show of the night -- actually grew week to week to a 4.9/13 from a 4.7/12.  CBS' shows stayed the same: "Criminal Minds" at 9 p.m. with 3.1/8 and "Survivor: Philippines" at 2.8/8. "CSI" at 10 p.m. actually grew to a 2.4/7 from a 2.3/6.

Two 10 p.m. rookie shows also held up: ABC's "Nashville" scored a 2.0/6, the same as a week before, and NBC's "Chicago Fire" grew two-tenths of a rating point to a 1.8/5.

In the battle of new comedies at 8:30 p.m., ABC's "The Neighbors" rose a bit higher to a 2.0/6 and NBC's "Guys With Kids" held at 1.4/4.

CW's mostly male-focused "Arrow" took a bit of a hit at 8 p.m. -- in part, possibly due to the strongly male-oriented World Series. It went to a 1.1/3 from a 1.3/4 the week before among 18-49 viewers.
