TWC Offers Free Tennis Channel Preview For U.S. Open

Time Warner Cable (TWC) hit back at CBS on Wednesday, saying it would offer the Tennis Channel with its U.S. Open programming as the blackout of CBS-owned stations continues in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas and elsewhere. CBS will still have the men’s and women’s finals and other key matches, so it’s hardly a replacement, but it follows the typical procedure during these carriage disputes to try to win consumers' hearts.

TWC has been airing a Starz network in place of CBS since Aug. 2.

TWC will make the Tennis Channel available free to digital customers in affected areas Aug. 26-Sept. 9. CBS says 3.2 million homes with TWC are without its stations.

The Tennis Channel will offer 75 hours of live U.S. Open coverage, TWC stated, including some prime-time matches.

But even without CBS, TWC customers will still be able to watch the U.S. Open delivered by CBS. The CBS Sports Network will carry matches -- and it remains on TWC systems, as does ESPN2, which will carry part of the tournament.

There is also free match coverage available on U.S. Open digital platforms, as TWC pointed out.

CBS is undoubtedly hoping the lack of the U.S. Open might persuade customers to complain to TWC and convince the cable operator to cut a deal in their dispute. The onset of NFL programming, however, might have a greater chance of spurring a settlement
