Hmm. So here's what passes for advertising news during the holidays. Hey, the media has bits and bytes to fill so they have to come up with something. So what are we talking about? No less than two stories have surfaced over the last day or two heralding the fact -- as if everyone in advertising didn't already know -- Apple's 1984 commercial didn't run first during the 1984 Super Bowl. It ran just before midnight on Twin Falls, Idaho TV station KMVT so that it could qualify for that year's awards. Yes, this is what's called the anniversary space filler and this is what we call news during the holiday when, in fact, there is no news because everyone has left the building leaving only the interns to run the show.
And that when the board of Apple first saw it, they hated it... Even Steve Jobs. They tried to sell their air time, but couldn't find any buyers, so were forced to run it. After it ran... Everyone claimed credit... No surprises there.

P.S. There's a lot more in Fred Goldberg's new book... "The Insanity of Advertising." Fred ran Chiat SF, which became the great GMO. Back in the good old days.
