Matt Cutts, the Google spokesperson, has stated that schema.org markup can't be "counted on" to improve google.com search engine results. What it should do, however, is to improve the click-through rate that you'll get from the search engine results page, because your snippet being displayed there should be more relevant to the search. Whatever search ranking results the Searchmetrics study claimed to see are probably due to other improvements in the websites being searched. That's because webmasters who go through the hassle of implementing schema have also taken other measures to improve their search engine rankings.
