AdBlock Plus Comes Clean On Acceptable Ads

Adblock Plus creator Eyeo has revealed crucial details behind the operation of the company’s controversial “acceptable ads” programme, which allows some advertisements through its ad-blocking software, often in exchange for a cut of the revenue received from the ads. In a blogpost, the company explained how it decides which publishers are asked to pay a fee to let their ads through, and gave a partial explanation as to how that fee is calculated.

I wonder if Eyeo would think it would be right if I hired a bunch of thugs to trash the exec's (the wrong color) automobile unless they paid me not to do harm. That is what comes to my mind when I read this.

After reading this again, who appointed Eyeo the right to decide what ads are "Acceptable? I am not running any banner ads at this time but I would be offended if I was a quality and respectable company that published a quality banner ad only to have it blocked by Eyeo. Eyeo better have money reserved for possible lawsuits that might follow.

Last, as a "Quality Publisher" for Fortune 500 sweepstakes advertisement, and we have seen sweepstakes ads blocked for years for different reasons, I am about to do something different. We are considering putting on our website a legal disclosure that it is harmful and illegal to block any ads by anyone for any reason. My beef is not with my members but with those who think they have been given a special right to play god over what ads get shown and what doesn't.  In short, I am telling Eyeo not to have any ads blocked on www.sweepstakestoday.com period. I hope Eyeo created an opt-out list that a publisher can sign up on before your program attacks my website. Who to say I can't defend my rights as a publisher from Eyeo and Ad Block Plus?
