'Washington Post' Taps Chan As Digital Director, Advances Brand Online

The Washington Post’s latest hire underlines the brand’s push to expand their digital efforts: Megan H. Chan has been named the new director of digital operations.

Chan will oversee TheWashington Post’s “digital progress” within the newsroom, according to a statement from the Post’s executive editor Marty Baron and managing editors Cameron Barr and Emilio Garcia-Ruiz.

Chan will work with departments to ensure they are on track with the Post’s digital transformation. For example, she will supervise their adoption of new technology tools to increase traffic, make sure they are meeting story publication schedules to correlate with online reading patterns and find new digital platforms to distribute the Post’s reporting, the statement explains.

Chan will monitor practices across the newsroom and look for any weaknesses in individual departments. She will also keep an eye out for areas that require more digital support, working closely with the Post’s reporters and editors.

Chan will collaborate with chief information officer Shailesh Prakash’s staff to build products for the newsroom to advance the brand’s digital goals.

She was previously director of digital products at Politico, where she worked for five years. Prior to joining Politico, Chan spent three years at USA Today as the online Washington editor and assistant news director.

Chan will begin in her new role on July 11. She will report to Garcia-Ruiz.

The Washington Post has been testing out new sources of revenue recently, launching a content suggestions product for its mobile Web site and tapping into virtual and augmented reality and the ad tech business.
