Hearst Newspapers Digital today announced new hires to its team of senior executives, including the
appointment of former Tribune Publishing vice president Esfand Pourmand to senior vice president of revenue.
In the newly created role of SVP of revenue at Hearst, Pourmand will grow
Hearst Newspapers’ portfolio of digital subscription products, developing new revenue-focused products and expanding Hearst’s leadership in data-driven product development and digital
marketing, per the company.
Pourmand has been vice president of product management and consumer revenue at Tribune Publishing since February.
Tribune Publishing has been at the
center of a media company standoff with Gannett, the publisher of USA Today. Though Tribune rejected Gannett’s $864 million takeover bid last month, Gannett doubled down, once a large
number of shareholders withheld support for Tribune’s board nominees last week. On Tuesday, Gannett again made clear their intention to acquire Tribune Publishing — but that the clock is
ticking on their offer.
Hearst Newspapers Digital also hired former
New York Times executive Fergal Carr to the new position of senior vice president of consumer product. He will be
responsible for overseeing digital innovation in user experience, immersive advertising and distributed content and products.
Both Carr and Pourmand will be based in New York and
report to Hearst Newspapers Digital president Robertson Barrett beginning in mid-June.
Hearst Newspapers president Mark Aldam stated: “Rob’s new leadership team will help
us evolve our Web and mobile properties into a robust portfolio of diversified subscription and free digital businesses.”
According to Barrett, Carr will also work on
“cross-pollinating the technology on the editorial and advertising sides.”
Carr added that he looks forward to spearheading "pairing intuitive and elegant interfaces with
engaging advertising products, enhanced by user data.”
Hearst Newspapers Digital has also promoted Karen Brophy to senior vice president of strategy and operations. She will
oversee daily operations and major growth initiatives, including integration of ecommerce and video into the newspaper properties.
