T-Mobile's 'Digits' Service Will Sync Many Devices To One Number

Can T-Mobile modernize the phone number for the mobile era?

Well, we’re going to find out when the carrier launches its Digits service at the end of the month.

With Digits, T-Mobile users can synchronize multiple devices -- from phones to desktop computers to smartwatches -- with one number.

The service allows people to use several phone numbers for one device -- so, for instance, they don’t have to carry two phones for personal and professional purposes.

By T-Mobile’s count, about 30 million U.S. consumers currently carry two or more phones.

T-Mobile says Digits performed well in tests. Among what the carrier says were “tens of thousands” of beta testers, 96% used the Digits app on additional smartphones and tablets, while 41% used it via a browser on their personal computer.

Of course, T-Mobile isn’t alone in its effort to update the phone number. Among other offerings, Google Voice has already changed the way many people think about cross-platform communication.

That said, Digits does boast some pretty cool features. For instance, people can set up their accounts so incoming calls will go directly to their phones and their smartwatches. With Digits, people can also send text messages right from their laptops or tablets.

Digtsl even works on phones from Verizon and AT&T.

On May 31, every T-Mobile customer’s phone number will be upgraded to Digits at no extra change. Through AutoPay, customers can add additional lines for $10 a month.

This is one of those; ... "Y'know, if we can figure out a way to have the two front wheels on our cars actually turn, and maybe have that controlled by someone inside the car, using some sort of 'wheel' thingie, maybe we won't have to always go whichever direction the car is facing" ... moments.
