Cortana In Microsoft Edge Finds Best-Priced Shopping Deals

Search engines and browsers have begun to transform into utilities. The latest move by Microsoft turns its personal assistant Cortana into a shopping guide that searches for better deals on specific items through the Edge browser.

The feature, running in a pilot program announced Friday, comes with the update to Windows 10 Creators. It allows consumers to compare prices of viewed items and displays current lower prices when available.

Today, the feature supports 14 retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, and eBay within the United States, but the plan is to increase the number of retailers supported in the months ahead.

When the consumer visits the site of a supported retailer, Cortana will send an alert that there are other options available at a lower price for the same product. Once the consumer click on the Cortana icon, the browser window will display the information in the right rail.

Cortana will only notify consumers if relevant deals are available at the time of their visit.

Microsoft initially began testing this feature with coupons during the holidays. At the time, Cortana alerted consumers about deals and coupons for shopping sites like Best Buy, Macy’s and Kohl’s. It also let consumers ask Cortana to remind them about sales when browsing in Edge.
