'Guardian US' Invites Dreamers To Guest-Edit Site

The Guardian US has invited four “Dreamers” to guest-edit the site for the next three days. The invite is part of a new editorial series called “We’re Here to Stay,” which features stories on the nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.

The Guardian says the goal of the initiative is “to elevate voices often excluded from the national conversation.”

The four Dreamers — Itzel Guillen, Irving Hernandez, Allyson Durate and Justino Mora — first met Guardian US editors at its Washington office in October to brainstorm and commission stories.

The team of Dreamers, all in their 20s, will oversee personal essays, commentary, photography and video for the site. Some 15 "We're Here to Stay" stories will run on the Guardian US homepage from Monday through Wednesday this week, ranging in topics from politics to the environment.

"These are inspiring, imaginative and resourceful young adults whose lives are currently being disrupted, and potentially destroyed, by politics," stated Guardian US acting editor John Mulholland. "Our project is an attempt to give them a voice and the power to tell their stories. We hope America will listen."

President Trump has pledged to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, otherwise known as DACA, a program which allows undocumented immigrations who came to the U.S. as children to legally live and work in the country.

Univision News will co-publish a selection of the "We're Here To Stay" stories in Spanish. The Columbia Journalism Review will co-publish a piece on “What The Media Gets Wrong When Covering Dreamers,” with tips for journalists who cover their communities.
