AT&T To Launch New 5G Speed This Year

AT&T plans to launch 5G mobile service in 12 markets later this year.

Future versions of 5G are expected to allow driverless vehicles to make real-time decisions based on information in addition to the individual sensors on the vehicle, according to AT&T.

“With faster speeds and ultra-low latency, 5G will ultimately deliver and enhance experiences like virtual reality, future driverless cars, immersive 4K video and more,” stated Melissa Arnoldi, president, AT&T Technology Operations.

The latest 5G timeframe is earlier than projected partly due to new standards recently approved by 3GPP, the international wireless standards body.

The technology will allow future vehicles to ‘see’ around corners, through other vehicles and at longer distances, enabling cars to quickly adapt to their current environment. One of the features of 5G speeds is that the time a button is pressed on a device until the time the action is taken is greatly shortened.
