Daimler Creates Group For Self-Driving Trucks

Daimler Trucks is creating the Autonomous Technology Group, a global organization for automated driving.

The group will be tasked with creating an overall strategy and implementing the automated driving roadmap, including research and development leading to the production of highly automated trucks, according to Daimler.

The formation of the group is part of Daimler Truck’s global effort to put highly automated trucks on the road within a decade. At CES in January, Daimler announced an investment of more than $570 million to support that effort.

“We are underscoring the importance of highly automated driving for Daimler Trucks, the industry and society as well,” states Martin Daum, member of the board of management of Daimler AG responsible for trucks and buses.  “With the new unit, we will maximize the effectiveness of our automated driving efforts and the impact of our investments in this key strategic technology. We will therefore be in the perfect position to put highly automated driving onto the roads, making transportation safer, saving lives and helping trucking companies boost their productivity.”

Corporate Double-speak B/S at it's best. He missed "for the children" to really make this easier to digest.

SAFER-  just how much "safer" could it be?  80,000 pounds rolling down the road with no
driver to anticipate the road ahead.................??  Come on

SAVING LIVES-  Prove this emotional tug at the heartstrings.  You can't unless you use a
"computer model"    which is how we got snookered into the Global Warming hoax

BOAST PRODUCTIVITY-  Again  SPECUALTION.  I guarantee this will slow down deliveries.
For one of these Auto-tonomous Pilot-less trucks , they will yield to any traffic merging in front of them, and when driver's know this, these trucks will never get up to speed limit.

MY CONSTANT QUESTION-  HOW MUCH????  does it add to the cost of the trucks.
And the dummies who are investing billions in this Dead Before Arrival Industry , don't realize that the trailer that a truck is pulling today, may not be the same one tomorrow.
Who is going to sync these 2 systems, the system for the truck, the system for the trailer??

Dumbest idea of the 21st Century, and getting Dumber.

    Opps, missed one-

What happens when hijackers take over the truck and take it to their docks to unload?
Jam the GPS, give it a false tracking .............but it will be SAFER, SAVE LIVES, and BOAST A TRUCK!!

What happens when GPS get unreliable, like during the 2020 solar maxiam, near mountrains, in tunnels, etc.?  What happens when hackers learn to steal the vehicle?  What happens when the vision recognition fails to detect a person laying in the road in time?  What happens when a batter terminal gets corroded, causing alternator spikes that restart the computer?  What happens when servos jam or a power steering belt breaks?  What happens when a train crossing gate fails to come down when a train approaches?  How many animals do you think these things would kill?  Do you think they will ever pass a driver's license test?  Do you think any state is going to allow something that has not passed the same driver's test humans have to pass?

Not to mention that the daily certification would cost more than a human driver would add to the cost.

Not to mention things like accidents, detours, debris in the road, sensing malfunctions, refueling, checking tire pressures, etc.

However, it is a great idea for delivery system of terrorist bombs.

Thanks Mark and Krk, you raise some of the key (and monster) issues facing this.
