Firm That Lets Consumers Own Their Own Data Opens In UK, U.S. Is Next

Mine, an Israeli startup that allows consumers to own and control their own data, has launched in the UK and is planning to enter the U.S. market next, according to media reports.

Founded last year, Mine offers consumers “a real choice about who gets to keep their data and how it’s used,” states Gal Ringel, co-founder and CEO of Mine, who is relocating to the UK

Ringel says, “we are kick-starting the future of data ownership.” The company had raised €2.7 million in seed funding in 2018. That round was backed by Battery Ventures and Saban Ventures.

According to reports, Mine uses algorithms to uncover digital traces in consumers’ email inboxes. It helps users exercise the right to be forgotten under the GDPR by sending a reclaim request asking each firm to delete the user’s data.

The firm says it does not collect personal data or email content.

EU-Startups reports that Mine has analyzed four million digital services to date to determine which data is being stored on individuals.

Ringel told Silicon Canals that the company expects to launch in the U.S. in mid-2020 and that it anticipates another funding round sometime this year.

The company now has 11 people on staff.

    Ray,

This is timely because we received a request from this company recently, and will be happy to help them.

I was struck by the fact that the request we received provided zero evidence that they (Saymine) had any authority to send us the enquiry we received, and it was impossible for us to verify the integrity of the information request, let alone the deletion request they sent. They've got some work to do, but no doubt $2.7M will go a long way!

It would be great to catch up with Gal when he gets to London. He's chasing an idea many of us have had for many years. I was just talking about this 'play' today with an industry veteran. There are quite a lot of challenges to overcome.

    Dear Robin,

Thanks for the great feedback. As you mentioned, there's still a way to go and we just started. I'd be happy to connect and share our story. Can you send me an email to support@saymine.com and I'll pick it up from there?
