Toyota, TomTom and Denso are working together to create a fast,
high-definition map-building method for roads to facilitate autonomous driving.
Toyota Research Institute Advanced Development, Inc., TomTom and Denso executed a proof of concept demonstration
of the system.
The companies used Toyota test vehicles equipped with Denso sensors, Toyota’s automated mapping platform and TomTom’s cloud-based transactional mapping platform.
The sensors are used to collect road observations, which are then converted and corrected by Toyota’s platform for input into TomTom’s mapping platform.
“We believe a
multi-sourced HD map is essential to making safer autonomous driving possible,” stated Willem Strijbosch, head of autonomous driving at TomTom.
