TiVo DVR Users Lose HBO App Access Today

In the latest complication arising from the May launch of HBO Max alongside HBO, TiVo DVR users will stop having access to the HBO app as of today (Aug. 31).

Last week, TiVo emailed customers to encourage them to switch to HBO Max, which is available on the TiVo Stream 4K.

The company said that users may be able to continue accessing HBO content through the HBO Max app, but warned that they may need a separate subscription.

The HBO app is being dropped from TiVo’s retail DVR devices, but not its MSO affiliate DVR devices, according to Fierce Video.

In mid June, WarnerMedia announced it was rebranding HBO Now as HBO, and replacing HBO Go with HBO Max.

HBO Go was removed from primary platforms as of July 31, but most customers using Go to get HBO content can now access it through the HBO Max app. HBO Now subscribers have access through the HBO app.

Due to stalled distribution agreement negotiations, the HBO Max app is still not available on the approximately 80 million Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices in the U.S.

However, in early August, Amazon and WarnerMedia agreed that while negotiations continued, Fire TV device users’ access to the legacy HBO app (formerly HBO Now) would be extended. No expiration date for the extension was announced.
