Broadcasters Test NextGen TV Via Comcast Cable Infrastructure

Broadcasters from the Phoenix Model Market NextGen TV development project and broadcast group Pearl TV are working with Comcast to explore delivering NextGen TV services through Comcast’s cable infrastructure.

The participants aim to provide the industry with a foundation for a “real world” technical example of how to transmit ATSC 3.0 over hybrid fiber-coaxial infrastructure.

The Phoenix project will continue to expand its own testing while also testing compatibility between the current cable and future broadcast architecture in the Portland market.

“Seven local broadcasters are now on the air with NextGen TV in Portland, so it makes sense to work with a major operator in the area like Comcast to determine what’s needed to distribute this new capability to cable customers,” explains Anne Schelle, managing director of Pearl TV, which is managing the Phoenix Model Market implementation.
