Most Consumers Are Using BOPIS -- Or Will, Study Finds

Buy Online, Pickup In-Store (BOPIS) usage has grown by nearly 500% during the pandemic, according to a study from Package Concierge, conducted by Hanover Research.

Of current users of BOPIS, over half plan to maintain their current frequency of usage over the next year, while 33% will increase it. And almost half of non-BOPIS users are likely to try it in the next three months.

In addition, 66% of shoppers would use an automated locker system for pickup if it was offered, and 53% say a locker option would influence their choice of a retailer.

But brands have to be prepared to communicate via email and text.

Using Package Concierge’s tool, “customers purchase items online and receive a secure authentication code, via email and text, that confirms the purchase is ready for pick-up,” states Penny Lasater of Package Concierge’s retail division. “Once at the store, consumers scan their code at the locker system and retrieve their items”

Lasater adds, “Savvy retailers are laser focused on deploying scalable and financially viable BOPIS fulfillment options that meet the demands of the consumer, while offering the COVID-related advantage of a contactless experience.”

Hanover Research surveyed 982 consumers and 5,435 respondents in the non-BOPIS user analysis.
