Fortnite Expands Beyond Battle Royale With New Lego Games

Epic Games has introduced two new games to its metaverse game Fortnite via its recent partnership with Lego. With these new offerings, Epic is attempting to expand the definition of Fortnite beyond a popular Battle Royale first-person shooter game while helping Lego to attract a wider variety of users.

After 18 months of development, Epic unveiled Lego's first Fortnite experience -- a multiplayer “survival crafting game” -- in early December, marking both the toymaker's first metaverse launch and Fortnite's foray into becoming more of a platform than a Battle Royale game, giving players a wider variety of in-game options.

After its first Lego launch, Fortnite introduced “Rocket Racing,” a 3D arcade racer game created by “Rocket League” developer Psyonix, and “Fortnite Festival,” a music game that for its second season will be headlined by Lady Gaga.

In addition, Disney is investing $1.5 billion in an equity stake in Epic Games, with plans to create an “expansive and open games and entertainment universe” in which consumers can “play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more” in Fortnite, according to the company.

Now, Fortnite is also home to two additional Lego titles, including a multiplayer game called “Lego Raft Survival” and a virtual obstacle course called “Lego Obby Fun.” Both games were built by Epic's Unreal Editor for Fortnite tool.

As part of today’s announcement, Lego said: “the Lego Fortnite journey is just beginning, with new world building, gameplay feature, and more Lego Style Outfits arriving in updates throughout 2024.” Since launching the first Lego Fortnite game, Epic has released 1,200 Lego skins into its Fortnite universe.

As Fortnite expands and looks to compete with platforms like Roblox -- a metaverse gaming platform that is home to a wider variety of user demographics and experiences -- Lego has the chance to attract a new generation of young people through Fortnite’s 400 million registered users.
