Bayer, Aleve's parent, has teamed up with
Mary Bono and Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse (MAPDA) to explore possible alternatives to opioid use.
The U.S. makes up only 4.4% of the world’s population, but it consumes more
than 80% of the world’s opioids, per the partners.
The campaign runs on YouTube, the Aleve sites and "Till The Wheels Fall Off," Matt Robinson's podcast. It's also airing on National
Consumer League's "We Can Do This!" podcast.
MullenLowe Global is responsible for the creative.
In the ads, real patients seek advice from an expert about pain-relief. The catch?
The pain “expert” is in recovery for a opioid use disorder and shares the impact of addiction on their lives.
The video urges patients with prescribed opioids to
educate themselves about over-the-counter, non-addictive pain management options, such as Aleve. The CDC recommends maximizing non-opioid therapies as appropriate before using opioids for acute
pain.
The campaign includes a site that provides information on nonaddictive pain options, including various research-backed, supportive therapies, including physical therapy,
aromatherapy, chiropractic care, yoga, restorative sleep and meditation.

“We know there are instances when prescription opioids may be the best course of treatment for some patients, but we
want patients with minor pain to know about less addictive options that can be used as the first line of treatment,” said Jeff Jarrett, CMO, Bayer Consumer Health, North America.
