'CBS Evening News' Will Return To NY With Co-Anchor Team

Congratulations are in order for two of New York’s best local news talents -- WCBS/2 news anchor Maurice DuBois and weatherman Lonnie Quinn.

The news came yesterday. As part of a comprehensive remaking and relocating of “The CBS Evening News,” DuBois, 58, has been called up from local TV to co-anchor the CBS flagship newscast with CBS News anchor/correspondent John Dickerson, 56.

The two will be the only co-anchor team in network news when the plan comes together some time after the elections in November.

As part of the changes, Norah O’Donnell, 50, is stepping down as “Evening News” anchor after Election Day to become a senior correspondent for CBS News.

Along with the new co-anchors, the show will move from Washington back to its long-time home at CBS Studios in New York.

Quinn, 60, has been named chief weathercaster for “The CBS Evening News.”

The changes were announced chiefly by Wendy McMahon, 49, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations, and CBS Media Ventures.

The title puts her in charge of the company’s news division, owned TV stations and the syndication unit whose properties include “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!”

Naming two talents from local New York news to the network newscast is likely part of the blending of CBS News and the news resources of CBS’s local station group that has been ongoing as the units produce more hours of news content both nationally and locally.

But it is not a total loss for New York. “DuBois and Quinn will continue to have a regular presence across WCBS,” the CBS press release said.
