Many, if not most, Super Bowl viewers, stick around for the ad breaks -- for some the ads even are the main event -- which poses challenges for bathroom breaks. The debut Super Bowl ad for Georgia-Pacific toilet paper brand Angel Soft leans into the issue, with an ad featuring its baby Angel mascot designed to give viewers some much needed relief with a well-timed “Potty-tunity.”
“We recognize the problem many face during the big game where every moment – from legendary plays and iconic halftime shows to must-see commercials – is unmissable,” Rafael Garcia, vice president general manager, Angel Soft, said in a statement. “Angel’s core motivation is to end unnecessary tradeoffs and this year she’s providing a potty-tunity so fans don’t have to choose.”

Angel Soft’s 30-second Super Bowl debut, created by Grey New York, will air after the second quarter, just before halftime, timing designed to maximize the impact of the “Potty-tunity” for fans. It’s meant to be missed -- nothing much happens, beyond the Angel Soft mascot manning a countdown timer letting viewers know how much time is left to go potty.
This week, the brand unveiled a teaser for the ad, which follows the brand kicking off the campaign with an integration with Fox Sports’ coverage of the NFC Championship Game, which featured Fox Sports personalities Julian Edelman and Charissa Thompson.
The Super Bowl provides a prime platform to highlight a wider phenomenon. According to an Angel Soft survey of 2,000 consumers conducted by Talker Research, 92% said they’ve had to hold off on a trip to the bathroom to avoid missing out on something, while 61% said they rush themselves in the bathroom to avoid missing important moments, and 47% said hey’ve been late to events because of a bathroom run.
Angel Soft will continue the focus on bathroom breaks after the Big Game is over. Following the Super Bowl, the brand will continue with a campaign designed around offering “well-timed bathroom breaks by providing potty-tunities throughout the year during other can’t-miss important moments like concerts, festivals, road trips, movies, and more.”
