Reddit Allows Users To Block Specific Advertisers

In a move that may concern brands, Reddit will now allow users to block an ad from their feed, automatically triggering the platform to hide all future ads from that specific advertiser account “for at least a year,” the company explains.

In addition to reporting an ad or learning more about the ad via the ad dropdown menu, users are now able to “hide” the ad, eliminating all ads from that company if they choose to.

The company says the feature is being added to the platform in response to feedback from redditors wanting “more control over the ads they see,” following last year's integration of sensitive ad filters, which let users limit ads on certain topics, like politics and religion.

While blocking certain ads from the feed will likely enhance the general user experience on Reddit, it may hinder the company's reputation with brands.

Depending on how many users choose to hide in-app promotions, brands may feel less inclined to allocate a significant portion of their ad budget to Reddit.

It is worth noting, however, that even with this new feature, Reddit will limit how many advertisers a single user can block at a time. The company has not provided any relevant details, but some users have reported receiving notifications explaining that they have reached their daily limit of ad blocks.

Still, no other major social media platform has enforced a similar ad-blocking tool due to the potential loss of ad dollars.

Reddit says that the update will become available to iOS, Android and web users over the next several weeks, with the “Hide” option to become available for any ads across feeds, including the home feed and subreddit feed.
