'Happy Gilmore' And Zepbound: One Degree Of Separation

Actress/comedian Kym Whitley is having quite a July. Besides a featured role in “Happy Gilmore 2,” premiering in theaters July 25, she’s been named one of weight loss drug Zepbound’s first two paid brand ambassadors.

The other is social media lifestyle personality Nita Danielle, who’s already posted the first episode of her “Zepbound Diaries” on Instagram.

“I’ve been transparent with you guys about the challenges I face with my weight,” Danielle begins in the video. “I’m excited to start sharing some of the steps I’ve taken on my journey like adjusting my eating habits and trying new exercises. Now, after talking to my doctor, she prescribed Zepbound to be incorporated into my routine..."

In accompanying text, Danielle says, “As a mom who’s approaching 40 and wants to be able to play with my future grandkids, I’ve been on a mission to make myself a priority.”

Whitley, who turned 64 earlier this week, has yet to post anything under the new partnership, but Zepbound marketer Eli Lilly has published a Q&A for the media titled “Kym Whitley Gets Real About Obesity,” in which she answers such question as “Why did you decide to share your story?" and “What do you want people to know about Zepbound?”

“Realizing that obesity is a disease and that Zepbound, along with diet and exercise, is a tool to treat it was extremely helpful for me to get unstuck,” Whitley says in the only highlighted quote.

While Whitley and Danielle are Zepbound’s first paid endorsers, non-paid endorsers of GLP-1 meds, which also include Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Ozempic, have helped propel the category over the past couple of years.

Celebs discussing their use of one GLP1 or another have included Elon Musk, Chelsea Handler, Tracy Morgan, Whoopi Goldberg and  Oprah Winfrey.

Telehealth firm Ro meanwhile, recently enlisted Zepbound user Charles Barkley in an ad campaign for GLP-1s in general.

Novo Nordisk has used Queen Latifah in GLP-1 campaigns and in January, named Jodi Mudgett, CEO of real estate firm Dream Home Consulting and a former marketing exec with AstraZeneca, as a Wegovy brand ambassador.
