Meta’s Twitter/X copycat app continues
to grow steadily. According to a post from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Threads has reached 400 million monthly active users, marking an increase of 50 million people over the past four months.
“As of a few weeks ago, there are more than 400 million people active on Threads every month,” reported
Instagram head Adam Mosseri. “It’s been quite the ride over the last two years.”
Meta began teasing the launch of Threads in 2023, shortly
after billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk took over Twitter, later changing its name to X.
Built on the back
of Instagram, the tech giant initially deemed the social-messaging clone “Instagram for your thoughts,” with an immediate goal of providing an alternative “safe,”
“stable” space for users and creators who were disturbed by the changes Musk was making to Twitter.

Because of the ease with which Instagram
users could log in to the new app, Threads became the fastest-growing app in history, reporting 100 million sign-ups in the first five days of its public launch.
Public interest soon slowed, but with the release of various Twitter-like features and a burgeoning investment in the app’s ad business,
Threads is seeing more engagement from more users,
resulting in just 200 million fewer MAUs than X.
As Threads continues to gain active users across the globe, X may actually be losing users.
According to the platform’s European reporting, X has lost 15% of
its user base in the EU since Musk bought the app. X’s overall mobile engagement has also declined.
