YouTube Gives Banned Creators A Second Chance

Prioritizing the growth of creator channels, YouTube is offering some previously banned creators the option to request a new channel and rebuild their presence on the platform.

“Over the next several weeks, eligible creators will begin to see an option to request a new channel when they log into YouTube Studio on desktop with their previously terminated channel,” YouTube explains in a blog post. “Creators whose requests are accepted will be able to create new channels.”

Prior to this new pilot program, YouTube has allowed banned creators to appeal the platform's termination decision.

Reversed bans have typically resulted from the enforcement of outdated Community Guidelines policies, though YouTube says the majority of appealed decisions are upheld.

YouTube acknowledges that the platform has “evolved and changed over the past 20 years” and is therefore open to offering banned creators more options to return. Once accepted, creators can also apply to rejoin the YouTube Partner Program, which now boasts over 3 million channels and $100 billion in creator payouts.

The company is clear in its statement that creators who are eligible to return will be signing up for “a fresh start,” with the ability to re-upload policy-appropriate videos to the new channel.

In considering who can return, YouTube is taking into account how severe a creator's previous violation was, “or whether the creator's on- or off-platform activity harmed or may continue to harm the YouTube community,” such as channels that endanger children's safety.

Creators who engaged in alleged copyright infringement or violated YouTube's Creator Responsibility policies will also be unable to apply to the pilot program.

Furthermore, eligible applicants are not able to apply for a new channel until a year has passed since their termination, unless an appeal is accepted.

YouTube plans to roll out this process to eligible creators over the coming months.
