With its next-generation augmented reality (AR)
glasses slated for 2026, Snapchat has announced it is developing a virtual 3D world where users can interact with each other’s Bitmoji avatars and immerse themselves in the digital
environment.
“When you log in to Snapchat on the web, you’ll find your Bitmoji waiting in the middle of a virtual 3D
world,” the social media company explains in a Snapchat Support update, adding that users’ friends will appear in the digital town center – also known as “Bitmoji Plaza”
– when they sign into the platform as well.
Right now, Snapchat has not introduced any immersive games or
additional engagement experiences to Bitmoji Plaza. Avatars can simply “move or dance around,” and “wave to each other.”

However,
this does mark a notable expansion in the company’s web app, which it launched in 2022, as well as an acknowledgement to the 2.7 billion Bitmoji avatars that are currently active.
The feature could also be a potential launching point for more involved virtual experiences once Snapchat begins
selling its AR Spectacles, competing with tech giants like
Meta, which are also expanding their wearable-accessible metaverse environments.
Bitmojis will only appear
in the virtual web-based world if Snapchatters opt in, the company adds.
