The Ultimate Social Distance: Sweden Is Giving Away Custodianship Of 5 Private Islands

Sweden has more islands than anywhere else in the world, and five lucky winners can become a year-long custodian of one of their very own.

A new campaign for Visit Sweden, the country’s travel and tourism board, is inviting consumers to apply to actually win custodianship of one of five pre-selected islands out of the more than 267,000 islands in the Nordic country. The “Your Swedish Island” campaign, created with Prime Weber Shandwick, doesn’t actually award the island itself.

Each of the five winners receives a certificate and the “personal right to use a designated Swedish island for a period of one year,” along with round-trip travel for two to Sweden.

“Sweden has more islands than any other country in the world, and we would like to invite people to enjoy what may be the most genuine form of luxury: the peace and tranquility of nature on your own island,” said Susanne Andersson, CEO at Visit Sweden.

The brand cites a recent YouGov survey, which found that people are “drawn to silence, fresh air and free access to nature,” with 44% of respondents saying, “they would gladly escape the crowds by going to their own island.” The report also found 77% of respondents said they would consider visiting a Swedish island.

An online promotional video, seen here, utilizes stunning drone and on-the-ground footage of the idyllic islands, highlighting beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Held in conjunction with the National Property Board, the contest requires entrants to submit a video here detailing why they deserve to win custodianship of an island. Entries will be judged by a jury for “creativity and personal motivation.” The deadline for submissions is April 17.
