Mr. Clean is both an all-purpose
cleaner and a brand icon. The bald, fit white T-shirted figure made his debut in a 1958 black-and-white commercial. And on Feb. 18, 2026,
outfitted in an Hawaiian shirt, he announced his retirement on TikTok.
It was short-lived.
During
his retirement, Mr. Clean hit the beach, completed athletic events and powered his social feeds. Given his visibility in pop culture, major press outlets commented — and by March 4, he was
back.
The brief intermission sparked a comeback in the form of new products, including an updated Magic Eraser, new shower and tub scrubber and new scents for the multipurpose cleaner
line.
The Mr. Clean Retirement & Comeback campaign was developed by PG One, Publicis Groupe’s agency for Procter & Gamble, and MLS.

“Legacies last forever, and Mr.
Clean’s was nowhere near finished. We’re thrilled he’s back ... there is no one we’d rather partner with than the legend himself," said Dave Landers, vice president, North
America surface care, P&G.
“I tried to stay retired, but the ideas got too big,” added Mr. Clean. One of the most recognizable figures in advertising, he was designed by the
Tatham-Laird & Kudner agency.
